On Cloudultra Pro: technical development for ultra-distance applications

Ultra-endurance confronts athletes with major challenges, including maintaining energy and fitness over demanding and varied terrain. The On Cloudultra Pro model has been specifically designed to optimize these factors. Developed by Swiss brand On through rigorous biomechanical analysis and intensive athlete testing, this product presents itself as a state-of-the-art technical solution. Its approach to reducing muscular fatigue makes it one of the outstanding products nominated for this year's Trail Running Awards.

Swiss engineering for energy efficiency

The Cloudultra Pro is the culmination of an ambitious development process: to create a shoe capable of maintaining energy efficiency and comfort over extreme durations. The design was based on finite element analysis (FEA) and close collaboration with professional runners.

The model incorporates On's most advanced innovations:

  • Helion™ HF dual-density midsole: combines two densities of Helion™ foam for superior cushioning and energy return over very long distances. Laboratory and field tests have validated its impact on optimizing performance (VO₂ max) both uphill and downhill.

  • Lightweight construction: At just 275g (men's size EU 44) and 220g (women's size EU 38.5), the shoe has been designed to support performance without compromising durability.

Optimized stability and traction

Adapting to unpredictable mountain terrain was a priority, focusing on the critical moments of the race: technical descents and steep climbs.

  • Optimized Missiongrip™ outsole (FEA): Over 200 outsole configurations have been analyzed via FEA software. The result is an optimized lug pattern and orientation aimed at ensuring superior traction on all surfaces and improving downhill control.

  • Leno Weave upper: This new weaving technique combines exceptional breathability with a stable structure and high abrasion resistance, qualities that are essential for the variable weather conditions of ultra-trails.

Validation and measured benefits

The scientific approach to the development of Cloudultra Pro has enabled us to verify several concrete benefits for the athlete:

  • Reduced fatigue: athlete tests have validated reduced muscle fatigue and improved energy conservation.

  • Performance on technical terrain: the shoe showed improved efficiency (VO₂ max) and increased management of impact stress on the ascent and descent phases.
